Chortle student hunt gets under way

Chortle’s hunt for the best new student comics in Britain kicks off in Newcastle this week.

Thursday’s heat at the Castle Leaze hallsof residents is the first of 12 shows around the country. Each will feature a top circuit headliner and compere, plus a drinks promotion.

And if you can’t get to any of the shows, Chortle will be putting clips of every competitor online, starting from early next week.

Comedy fans will then be able to vote for their favourite act, with the ‘people’s choice’ winner landing a place in the final at the Edinburgh Fringe in August.

Heats will also be held in Leeds, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Nottingham, Warwick, Manchester, London, Southampton, Bristol, Swansea and Sheffield.

First prize in the competition, sponsored by Revels chocolates, is £2,500.

Chortle is also hosting a comedy pub quiz at the Leicester Comedy Festival on Sunday. The event, in aid of Amnesty and a local Aids charity, will be hosted by Patrick Monahan at Bowies bar in the Best Western Belmont House Hotel from 4.30pm.
