Steve Martin to publish his memoirs

Steve Martin is writing his memoirs about his time as a stand-up.

Publishers Scribner say the book, Born Standing Up, is ‘a riveting chronicle of his early years as a stand-up comedian and a fascinating portrait of an era’.

The book is expected out in the States by early 2008, but no exact publication date has yet been set. It will also be published in Britain by parent company Simon and Schuster, and be available on CD and as a download.

Scribner’s editor-in-chief Nan Graham, who landed the deal, said: ‘This is a book that no one but Steve Martin could write, but it is also the universally compelling story of a man whose aspirations and fierce tenacity took him to greatness.’

The comic, now 61, began his comedy career in 1967, writing for the Smothers Brothers, before becoming one of the biggest stand-up stars of the Seventies and Eighties with his ‘wild and crazy guy’ persona.

He has more recently written fiction, including Cruel Shoes, Pure Drivel and Shop Girl and the play, Picasso At The Lapin Agile, but this will be his first autobiography.
