It pays to be a Coward
Sketch group Cowards have landed a six-part Radio 4 series on the back of a successful pilot episode.
The four-man troupe are currently appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe, where they were first spotted, and will record the radio show later this year.
Their publicist said: ‘Most Fringe acts come to Edinburgh in the hope of being spotted and signed up for a radio or television deal. Cowards landed a series on Radio 4 before they had even booked their train tickets – although they did leave it a bit late…’
Paul Schlesinger, the BBC’s head of radio entertainment at BBC, said: ‘The Cowards are an inspired addition to radio’s sketch show tradition, combining a sharp distinctive tone with mainstream appeal - clever and funny.’
The group – Tim Key, Tom Basden, Stefan Golaszewski and Lloyd Woolf - are also developing a TV show with independent production house Angel Eye.
Key, whose solo Edinburgh show from the 2004 Fringe, Luke & Stella‚ was previously made into the Radio 4 series All Bar Luke, has also been signed to record his own six-part show for the station. And Golaszewski has just finished recording a pilot of his sitcom, Philip Gets Involved.
