Beeb plans Asian sitcom
The BBC is planning an all-Asian sitcom.
The show is in its very early stages, with producers still working on a script and casting.
BBC Talent has put up a small amount of money to develop the idea, and once a half-hour script has been written, a sample five-minute pilot will be filmed.
As the project is still months away from the screen – even if it does come to fruition – even details of what channel it may air on are not yet available.
One of the show’s stated aims is ‘to highlight and celebrate Britain's massive ethnic diversity’.
This will be the first attempt at an ethnically driven sitcom since The Crouches, which was criticised by some black actors for being scripted a white writer, and by some critics for simply being no good.
The casting call has gone out for Asian stand-ups and comedy actors who want to attend auditions, which will be held in Glasgow in August and Birmingham and London in September.
