Papal like us
Popetown, the controversial animated comedy the BBC pulled from the schedules, is to be released on DVD.
The Vatican-based cartoon, which featured Ruby Wax as the voice of the Pope, was dropped after it came under fire from the Catholic Church last year.
BBC Three decided not to risk causing offence, and canned the £2.5 million show before it even aired, saying its “comic impact did not outweigh the potential offence it will cause".
Now – and despite the new religious hatred laws brought into force last month – video label Revolver is to release the 10-part series in September.
The company’s existing catalogue includes the DVDs of Richard Pryor’s live stand-up shows.
Revolver managing director Justin Marciano said: ‘Revolver has never shied away from controversial titles. Popetown is an incredible piece of work with an outstanding cast, we’re delighted to have acquired it despite stiff competition from bigger organisations.
"As soon as we saw it we knew it would be a huge hit with the British public who love controversy and will undoubtedly reserve judgement until they have seen it for themselves.’
Matt Lucas, Mackenzie Crook, Jerry Hall, Bob Mortimer and Kevin Eldon also voiced parts in the show, which was made by Channel X.
