Look who's back

Ben Elton hits the road after 8 years

Ben Elton is to return to live stand-up – with his first tour in eight years.

The fast-talking pioneer of alternative comedy performed to more than 300,000 people when he hit the road in 1997.

But since then he appeared to have abandoned his comedy roots, writing the hugely successful Queen musical We Will Rock You and Tonight’s The Night, based on Rod Stewart’s songs. He has also written a string of novels and the film Maybe Babyin the years since he was last on stage.

The tour marks a huge gamble for millionaire Elton, now 46. It will either prove he hasn’t lost his comedic edge; or confirm the fears of critics who believe he’s sold out since those groundbreaking early days.

Promoters promise Elton will be performing brand-new material, adding: “He can still cut it live, but will you be able to keep up? Buy [tickets] now and tout them later.”

He will be on the road from November, with 23 dates so far announced taking him into 2006. Click here for the schedule.

Elton has also just finished writing a new sitcom, which he will be directing for the BBC later this year.
