I hate Spam, a lot
Former Python Terry Jones has slammed the Broadway production of Spamalot as “utterly pointless”.
Eric Idle’s musical reworking of the Holy Grail film is proving one of the biggest hits of the New York theatre, and only last month picked up 12 nominations in the prestigious Drama Desk awards.
But Jones, who attended the premiere in March with the other three surviving Pythons has complained that it was just “full of air”
Speaking at the Rose d'Or TV festival in Switzerland, he added: “I hope that isn't what Holy Grail looked like on screen.”
"I like doing things I'm interested in and regurgitating Python doesn't come high on my list.”
However, he will be making money from the success of Spamalot, saying he, John Cleese, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam were all receiving a "small proportion" of its takings.
“We agreed to a deal,” he said. “But if we'd known it was going to be such a success, we'd have asked for a better deal,"
"But it's Eric's show. He will make more out of Spamalot than anybody has ever made out of Python. Good luck."Published: 6 May 2005
