Sun shines on Fringe

Aussie comics scoops C4 title

Sydney-based comic Nick Sun has won this year’s So you Think You’re Funny? competition.

The Asian comic wins £2,000 and a trip to next year’s Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal after triumphing over 250 hopefuls in the Channel 4-backed competition.

His laid-back act mocks the formulaic stand-up of many other ethnic acts.

He said: “There’s really nothing like a competition element to suck the fun out of an otherwise enjoyable thing. I’m no good at acceptance speeches, so I’m going to stand here and revel in my own pomposity.”

Placed second was energetic Russell Kane, who said: “I’d like to thank Imodium for getting me through this evening.”

And third went to Chris McCausland, a blind comic, who said the accolade was a suitable ending to his "crazy year" in stand-up.

The final, hosted by Sean Lock, took place in Edinburgh’s Gilded Balloon last night.

Venue boss Karen Koren said: “It’s been a fantastic final. We have gone all round Britain looking for comedians, and I think everyone here tonight will have a career in comedy.”

The other finalists were Lee Bannard, Rob Collins, Rose Heiney, Zoe Lyons, Jariath Regan and Susan Taylor.
