24-hour record bid begins

Stand-up Mark Watson has started his record attempt to perform a continuous 24-hour show at the Edinburgh Fringe.

His aptly-titled Overambitious 24-Hour Show started at the Cowgate Central venue just before midnight, with the £3 tickets enabling punters to come and go as they please.

The 24-year-old former Cambridge Footlights member says he has a rough idea of how the show will pan out, but some hours will be less well-planned than others.

Watson  said: "It won't all be stand-up, there will also be  a mini-play, sketches,a parody of Channel 4's 100 Greatest shows,  celebrity guests, multimedia bits, 'satellite links' to other shows and more.

Other planned segments include a debate on the existence of

God, an hour spoken entirely in middle-aged clichés and readings from Watson’s debut novel Bullet Points.

Watson said he wanted to return to the Fringe's experimental  spirit and was inspired by David Blaine's endurance stunt in a box suspended over the time.

He said: “For some time I have felt the spirit of Edinburgh has wasted away. It has become very commercial and competitive and a bit like a career treadmill.”
