Sitcom star quits Hardware

The Office star Martin Freeman has quit the ITV1 sitcom Hardware to pursue more serious roles.

According to newspaper reports, the 32-year-old actor wants to avoid being typecast as a comic performer.

He won a Golden Rose award in Montreux for his role as Mike in Hardware, which attracted 4.4 million viewers, but was generally considered disappointing by critics.

An unnamed  ITV source told The Sun: “He wants to turn his back on comedy to avoid typecasting.

“ITV comedy chiefs are now looking to cast another actor or comedian in his role.”

Freeman’s other credits have included the Richard Curtis film Liove Actually, and the forthcoming Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy movie, in which he plays Arthur Dent.
