Head of the heard

Comics in line for radio awards

An obscure Welsh sitcom is up for the biggest prize in comedy radio against some of the most established names in the business.

DIY, which is only heard on BBC Radio Wales, has been nominated for the best comedy in the prestigious Sony Awards.

Set in a hardware store, the sitcom originated when a BBC scheme to find new talent in the regions unearthed a script by writer William Willis, and a six-part series was commissioned.

Also up for the award are the Radio 4 shows I'm Sorry I Haven't A Christmas Carol, Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis's The Now Show and Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation.

Radio 2's Jammin, which mixed musical comedians with humorous musicians, is the final shortlisted show.

Yorkshire-based stand-up Toby Foster, pictured, has also been nominated in the entertainment category for his show on BBC Radio Sheffield.

He's up against Danny Baker on BBC London, Heart's Jono and Harriet, Key 103's JK & Joel & Breakfast and XFM's Christian O'Connell.
