Springer opera nets four Oliviers

Jerry Springer: The Opera won four of Britain's leading theatre awards last night.

The comedy opera, co-written by former stand-up Stewart Lee, was named best new musical in the Oliviers.

Star David Bedella, who plays a satanic warm-up man, was named best musical actor and the entire chorus of 27 singers won the award for best supporting role the first time it has been shared in this way.

It's other award was for best sound design.

The awards also honoured Matthew Kelly for his role in Of Mice And Men bringing a happy end to a tough 12 months for the actor in which he was cleared of child sex claims.
