Mrs Merton 'set for comeback'

Aherne and Cash plan revival

Mrs Merton could be returning to TV screens, according to newspaper reports today.

Caroline Aherne has reportedly met co-creator Craig Cash to discuss bringing back the spoof OAP interviewer.

Cash told The Sun: "Caroline and me are talking about Mrs Merton. It's about time we brought her back."

The BBC would be happy to air any revival, as the original chat show, which ran from 1995 to 1997, was one of its biggest comedy hits. However a follow-up sitcom based on her home life was less successful.

Aherne and Cash fell out last year during work on his pet project Early Doors, resulting in her quitting the programme.

But that sitcom, and Aherne's last solo project, the Australia-based Dossa and Joe, never achieved the heights that their work together did.

Aherne has previously said that she did not want to work in front of the cameras again, because she hated the tabloid interest in her private life.
