Sitcom triumphs at awards

Everybody Loves Raymond triumphed at the Emmy awards last night.

Although the two awards won by White House drama The West Wing dominated the headlines, the family sitcom took twice as many honours - including best comedy and best writing in a comedy series.

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart - a satirical chat show - was named the best variety, music or comedy series, and the writing prize in the same category.

Curb Your Enthusiasm, created by Seinfeld collaborator Larry David, won an Emmy for the best directing in a comedy series

Everybody Loves Raymond's other awards wend to best supporting actor and actress Brad Garrett and Doris Roberts.

Debra Messing won best comic actress for Will & Grace on her fourth nomination. She said: "Oh my God, I never thought this was going to happen."

Tony Shalhoub was named best comedy actor for his obsessive-compulsive detective in Monk.

Comedian Wayne Brady also won an Emmy for the best individual performance in a music or variety programme for his improvising in Whose Line Is It Anyway? - which is still going strong in the US.

And, as previously reported, Bill Cosby was honoured with the second Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.
