Beeb looks north for comedy
The BBC is to set up a comedy development team in Manchester.
The new unit will be headed by comedy producer John Mountague, and will employ a talent scout to seek out the next Royle Family or Mrs Merton Show.
BBC comedy editor Kenton Allen said: "Over the past ten years the north west has produced a huge number of iconic comedy writers and performers.
"It's crucial that the BBC is actively seeking out the stars of the future and providing the next generation with the opportunities they deserve.
"The BBC is the only broadcaster with the commitment and expertise in comedy to make the most of what the North has to offer.
"This grass roots approach is the ideal way to find a rich and diverse mix of new performers."
BBC Manchester Comedy will be formally launched in October.
