Comic hunts for spoof newspapers

Ken Dodd has launched an appeal to track down copies of a spoof newspaper which he enjoyed as a child.

Billy's Weekly Liar was published by Bolton's of Preston and sold in local joke shops, as well as on Blackpool's golden mile.

It was packed with daft stories and jokes, but laid out to look like a real newspaper of the day.

Dodd, 74, said: "It's a comic newspaper that made me laugh as a child. I used to buy it as a teenager and would love to own every one. I only have two copies but it would be wonderful to complete the set.

"This is a real quest for a treasure-trove of tickleology and giggleology - both subjects I studied at Knotty Ash University."

Dodd's hoping to track down copies of the newspaper before opening Grin Up North, an exhibition devoted to comedy at Preston's Museum of Lancashire, on July 21.

"Humour runs through people like the writing in a stick of Blackpool rock," Dodd said. "It reveals people's personality and how they view life. Lancashire people always see the funny side. "
