£60m, taken as Red

Comic Relief announces record total

This year's Red Nose Day raised a record-breaking total of more than £60million.

Comic Relief organisers announced the final total - the equivalent to £1 for every man, woman and child in the UK - last night.

Lenny Henry, who hosted the telethon, said: "From raising £15.8million on the first Red Nose Day in 1989 to reach £60million in 2003, it is just absolutely amazing."

"Everyone who got involved should feel really proud of themselves".

The total announced on Comic Relief night, March 14, was £35million - but money has continued to pour in.

The cash will be spent on projects in the UK and Africa over the next two years.
