First Sein of a DVD

Jerry is working on sitcom release

Work has begun on the first Seinfeld DVD, five years after the hit sitcom ended.

Jerry Seinfeld has revealed that he is helping create interviews and commentaries for the discs, while producers are trying to track down out-takes that could also be included.

No release date is imminent, but news that preliminary work has started will be welcomed by fans.

Seinfeld told the website DVD Exclusive that the extras would be a key part of any release.

He said: "In all the years of the show, NBC had wanted to play some of our outtakes. And we always kind of made it a policy not to do that because we didn't like that thing when actors kind of crack up. We kind of wanted to maintain the reality of the show. But we're discussing that.

"And, the other thing we have that's very funny are these gag reels that we made at the end of the season each year. There's a lot of funny stuff on those."

He added that fans at live shows always asked him about DVD release at his stand-up shows, but he couldn't understand the attraction.

"They all want the DVD," he said. "I don't know why, it's on every day. But people like to own things, I guess."

The interview came as Seinfeld was promoting the DVD release of his documentary Comedian in the States.

The sitcom has so far remained off the DVD store shelves as producers seek to maintain its value in the lucrative syndication market among cable TV stations.
