A dramatic nomination

Izzard in line for Broadway accolade

Eddie Izzard has been nominated for a prestigious drama award for his role on Broadway.

The comic has made the shortlist for the most outstanding actor in a play in New York's Drama Desk awards.

The piece he stars in, A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg, has also been nominated for the most outstanding revival.

Izzard's fellow nominees include Jim Dale, for his role in the revival of Trevor Griffiths' play Comedians, and Simon Russell Beale for his role in Sam Mendes's acclaimed Uncle Vanya.

The winners will be announced on Sunday May 18.

Founded in 1949, the Drama Desk claims to be the only organisation that honours outstanding achievement in all areas of New York theatre. Its judging panel includes some of Broadway's toughest theatre critics.
