Khyber passed on...

Carry On exported to India

Carry On Up The Khyber is to be exported to India.

Carlton international has sold the rights to the 1968 comedy, even though some British critics say it panders to racial stereotyping.

The spoof on the 19th century British Raj features Kenneth Williams as the Khasi of Jalabar and Bernard Breslaw as Bunghit Din.

Now it will be distributed in the subcontinent as part of a package of Carry On DVDs and videos.

Jiten Hemdev, managing director of the Indian distributer Star Entertainment, said: "The films contain the slapstick and naught humour Indians love. Carry On Up The Khyber deals humourously with British colonial rule."

It is not India's first British comedy import Hindustani versions of Yes Minister have been specially made for the market.
