Women vie for comic title
Five comics will tomorrow compete in the final of a competition to find the best new female stand-up.
They will each perform a six-minute routine at Jongleurs in Camden, north London, in the culmination of the So You Think You're Really Funny? contest.
The finalists are:
- Irene Pink, a 29-year-old New Zealander who decided to give stand-up a try after she dated a comic and realised she was funnier than him
- Vicki Frango, a 25-year old web designer who does impressions
- Sally Bourne, a 35-year-old active in musical theatre
- Shazia Mirza, Britain's only female Muslim comic, who appeared on Have I Got News For You earlier this month
- Mary Bourke, a full-time comic who was inspired to perform stand-up ranks after seeing Sandra Bernhard
All live in London
The event was part of the Bodyform Comedienne Tour, an all-female line-up that played in Jongleurs' venues across the country.
An award for the funniest comic who peformed on that tour will also be made tomorrow night.
Bodyform marketing manager Martin Hodson said the event "is a wonderful opportunity to bring recognition to women who are trying courageous things or new professions".
