Defying the docs
Victoria Wood says she's defying doctors by going on the road.
The 47-year-old comic, who had a tumour removed in March, joked: "Doctors have told me I'm too old and middle-class to do stand-up, but I am determined to prove them wrong."
Wood, who has just started a 46-date national tour, added: "People think I am dead rich because I live near Richard and Judy, of Richard and Judy fame.
"But actually all the dinnerladies money went on the tabards, so I am forced to go around the country doing live comedy."
She also countered criticism her act is all about Gypsy Creams and support hose, saying: "Times have moved on and Kit Kat Chunkies are all the go. I would look a fool mentioning Gypsy Creams. They are the Nana Mouskouri of the biscuit world.
"Critics also say I am not dangerous. Well, I have a routine about getting a bit of crumpet out of the toaster with the bread knife. Don't tell me that's not dangerous."
The comic, whose magician husband Geoffrey Durham is also currently touring, has recovered from the operation to remove a non-cancerous growth from her womb.
