Tim Vine: So I Said To This Bloke
As always with Vine, this is another jam-packed collection of gags, gags, gags and more gags, all delivered with a knowing cheesiness and at a relentlessly quickfire pace. Wordplay, however tortured, is his forte, but anything stupid goes, as he playfully unleashes everything in his arsenal to try to win you over. There might have been, in less skilful hands, a hint of desperation to the fact that he’ll try absolutely anything to get laughs – but even that’s part of the big joke, like Steve Martin when he was at his ridiculous best. For a rapid-fire merchant, his tortuous ‘pen behind the ear’ trick is an audacious game of chicken with the audience’s patience, but he strings everyone along beautifully, milking their sense of expectation. This is a cheerful celebration of silliness: from musical interludes to prop comedy… and far better than having your wacky uncle attempt the same thing on Christmas afternoon.
Sample joke: Velcro? What a rip-off!
Extras: In keeping with the nature of his act, there’s a plethora of extras, many of them short and daft, such as his dad, Guy, telling a joke, and Flag Hippo In Love. Plus there’s a 23-minute Parade Of Sport, in which Tim generally fails to show off his physical prowess.
