Win your own Guard

DVDs up for grabs

Acclaimed Anglo-Irish comedy-thriller The Guard has been released on DVD today – and we have six copies to give away.

The film, which stars Brendan Gleeson as a prickly, unorthodox cop of questionable morals in a small Irish town, has been described as ‘a cross between Father Ted and Bad Lieutenant’.

Gleeson’s character Gerry Boyle is unimpressed when the enthusiastic, professional and straight-laced FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) arrives in pursuit of an international cocaine-smuggling ring. But despite his constant mocking, they come to work together to take on the gang.

Although based on the tried-and-tested ‘mismatched cop buddy’ format, The Guard dodges cliche thanks to the complex character of Boyle, a rough and weary nihilist who has some piercingly sharp dialogue behind the shaggy bluff. Gleeson puts in a compelling performance, while sharing an uneasy chemistry with his co-star.

Here’s a deleted clip from the film – exclusive to Chortle:
