Aisha Tyler and Tom Ballard

At Montreal Just For Laughs 2009

Two sets seen, but not otherwise reviewed, at the festival:

AISHA TYLER

Probably more famous for posing in swimsuits and revealing frocks than her comedy, if a Google Image search is anything to go by, the glamorous Aisha Tyler is introduced as one of Maxim’s Hot 100. But in comedy, it’s not what you look like, but what you’ve got to say that’s important– or at least should be. And this is where Tyler is found wanting.

She complains about not being able to sleep on planes, shares sarcastic comebacks she traded with her masseuse after breaking wind, and comments on the appearance of her first grey public hair – and very little of it is in the least bit interesting. There’s no great angle or point of view, just very modest moans, of which little is made.

She’s stand-up’s answer to daytime TV: a bland, ineffectual time-filler for those who want nothing challenging in their comedy.

TOM BALLARD

Only 19, Australian Tom Ballard looks born to the stage – and he pretty much was, with five years’ experience under his belt even before winning the Raw new act competition at this year’s Melbourne Comedy Festival.

This fresh-faced performer’s natural, upbeat delivery is matched by his enjoyably tongue-in-cheek material, mostly revolving around his homosexuality, which he discusses as if it were some terrible affliction. The gags are sometimes a little juvenile – though not necessarily in a bad way – and it would be nice to see him explore topics beyond his own sexuality, if only the length of the spots at Just For Laughs would allow that.

But above all else he boasts an engaging, open and amiable manner that makes him effortlessly appealing to listen to. rn
