This Rocks!
Each episode of 30 Rock revolves around Liz Lemon, the head writer of The Girlie Show, or TGS – dealing with artisitic temperaments, keeping spirits high and trying to maintain the show’s integrity.
Lemon is played by Tina Fey, also 30 Rock’s producer, who draws on her previous experience as head writer on the long-running comedy Saturday Night Live.
In the show – named after 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the headquarters of the NBC network, Lemon’s dedication to TGS leaves her something of a geek who struggles to find the right man. Her quirky and rather sardonic sense of humour leaves her co-stars regarding her as ‘socially retarded’.
Alec Baldwin plays Lemon’s no-nonsense boss Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) whose attempts to make the previously relaxed atmosphere of TGS more corporate and commercial – putting him at odds with her and the rest of her team. Jack is a slick, yet scrupulous executive with an affinity for overtly backhanded compliments, which are usually directed towards Liz.
Two key cast members of TGS are Tracy Jordan – as played by comedian Tracy Morgan – and Jenna Maroney – as played by Ally McBeal’s Jane Krakowski.
Jordan is an exciting but unpredictable talent, drafted in to revitalise the show. He is as at least mildly insane, but his extravagant antics are often carried out more to maintain his reputation. His recruitment cost the insecure and gullible Jenna her star billing. She is Liz’s confidante, working hard at her job but using her sexuality to get her own way with men. She could easily be classed as the dumb blonde, air-head stereotype of an actress.
