More comedy for Radio 7
BBC Radio 7 is to offer more comedy and be rebranded Radio 4 Extra.
Although the BBC Trust say the largely archive station is ‘well regarded’, it decided that it does not attract a big enough audience
But although it plans changes to the digital channel – including running Radio 4 repeats – the Trust said: ‘We will protect the current elements of Radio 7 that audiences particularly value, including increasing the weekly minimum amount of drama and comedy and setting limits around the amount of Radio 4 catch-up programming.’
Radio 7 currently commissions a few new comedy shows of its own, but today’s review concluded that ‘this output is making little impact’ on audiences.
The Trust concluded: ‘We believe that Radio 7 can play an important role in comedy. It is the area that audiences most with associate Radio 7 and we encourage management to develop this genre further to enhance Radio 7’s reputation and impact.’
BBC trustee David Liddiment, who led the review, said: “It is evident that Radio 7 is much loved by the loyal and passionate listeners that tune in each week. The challenge now is to bring in new audiences, while retaining the qualities that makes it special.’
