Red Dwarf returns!

...as a mobile phone cartoon

Red Dwarf is to return – but as an animated series for mobile phones.

Entertainement company Pitch has created cartoon clips to match audio footage from the original BBC Two series, for which subscribers will pay £3 a week.

Users can also access a Red Dwarf social network where they can chat, upload and rate pictures and videos, with options to download ringtones, wallpapers, screensavers and videos.

Pitch chief executive Martin Bowley said: ‘Red Dwarf is iconic with millions of die-hard fans across the world. Combining such comic genius with the latest in mobile entertainment technology creates an exciting and dynamic environment that will move the cult of Red Dwarf into another dimension.’

Producer Charles Armitage added: ‘Pitch Entertainment has created amazing, ground breaking technology that gives our fans the chance to access and enjoy Red Dwarf whilst on the move. The weekly animated mobisodes, the social networking functionality and the exclusive content will enhance the Red Dwarf experience for everyone."

The clips are available in 13 countries, including Malaysia and Singapore, as well as across Europe.

Red Dwarf, which is now approaching its 20th anniversary, has sold almost four million DVDs. A film version has long been rumoured to be in the pipeline, although many of those involved in the original series now believe this is no longer a possibility.
