John Oliver signs up for the Daily Show

British stand-up John Oliver has been signed to appear on acclaimed US satire The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

The comic had been due to appear at the Edinburgh Fringe with long-time collaborator Andy Zaltzman, but has instead travelled to New York to work on the Emmy-winning show.

Oliver, who has appeared with Zaltzman on Radio 4 shows Political Animal and The Department, will be a writer and appear on screen as a ‘UK correspondent’.

Executive producer Ben Karlin said: ‘John convinced us that the accent was real, and that was good enough for u.

‘As I understand it, we will be giving the UK one American comedian in exchange for John's services.  How do you feel about Pauly Shore?’

Oliver’s first show will air on Comedy Central in the States tonight, and on More 4 in the UK tomorrow.

Dave Gorman has previously appeared as a guest on the half-hour show,  and Perrier-winner Demetri Martin is a regular contributor.
