Tommy Tiernan at the Greenwich Comedy Festival

For all his home-nation fame and Celtic Tiger wealth, Tommy Tiernan prides himself on remaining an eejit on the fringes of acceptable society. He tells us be brought a swanky car, but looked such a tit in it that he swapped it for a 1981 Ford Capri, that was somehow more ‘him’; an anecdote that firmly establishes his credentials.

He shouts himself hoarse, as usual, with an impassioned delivery in which every syllable is pushed home with the force of a JCB – yet somehow maintaining the nuances of the material in a perfect combination of power and precision that engineers would boast about.

As he talks about his life as a father of five, and in particular of the trials of trying to have sex while there are small children in the house, everything is so delightfully described that you can picture perfectly the scenarios, and snort laughs of recognition and embarrassment at every one. Apparently throwaway phrases have the elegance and memorability of other comedians’ finely honed catchphrases, while the subject matter is disarmingly honest, if largely the sort of topics you should probably avoid in polite company.

It’s an irresistible combination of frankness and fiery delivery. If only we saw it more often on these shores.

Finally got to see Tommy live for the first time at the Brighton Comedy Festival and was delighted to find that the man's genius is unabated. I laughed throughout but his final comments on why women like to be on top in bed reduced me to a giggling mass, crying with laughter. If you get a chance to see him - go! This man deserves to be far better known in the UK. A brilliant, brilliant stand-up.

Saw him last night. Thought he was awful. Found the themes on Irish famine ill thought out and found the rest tedious. Walked out before the end.

Dan, September 2009

My favourite comedian!

Tracy Davis, November 2007

Best damn comedian around right now!

Katie, August 2007

Saw Tommy in Athlone and Ennis recently and I have to say I fail to see why he gets so many plaudits heaped on him. His act is a series of self indulgent rants that may be interesting to him but fail to register on the funnymeter. Someone. hould tell him that rallying against the Catholic Church in Ireland is sooo tired and redundant.A performer well past his sell by date and so totally wrapped up in his own head, he has forgotten the vital ingredient be funny.

i agree, February 2007

No comedian will ever match his talent

Fantastic comedian, I can watch his shows over and over and they never get old.

Jill, Aberdeen, August 2006

I can't believe Tommy isn't more well known outside his home country. Easily one of the finest comedians we've seen in the last 10 years.
