An assured, accomplished comic, America's Jim Gaffigan can be relied upon to engage any audience with his smart, no-nonsense routines.

His acutely-observed comedy of modern manners is very much in the Seinfeld mould - much of it involving the etiquette of eating out; or simply the joy of eating cakes - and he bears up to the comparison remarkably well.

One gripe is that his gimmick of vocalising what he believes the audience is thinking in a whiney, wispy voice can be annoying - but just as it really starts to grate, this laboured device will produce a top-notch gag that makes it forgivable. Well, almost.

But this is only a minor slip in an otherwise devastatingly effective set that is propelling him into the A-list of American stand-ups.
