Clare Campbell Clare Campbell

With her measured, dry delivery, Campbell is doing herself few favours, as it is hard for an audience to warm to someone so dispassionate.

A good half of the set is only mildly amusing, and without the lift of an enthusiastic performance, comes across as slightly disappointing. Stand-ups who choose to talk about their lives, however fictional, need to make a stronger personal connection with their audience than this.

However, Campbell's arid style comes into its own when she moves away from these areas into routines better tailored to her detached approach. Soberly reading out well-crafted letters of complaint to various companies provides a rich source of laughs, with her aloof delivery adding to, rather than detracting from, the material.

Echoes of Joyce Grenfell can be distinctly heard in these monologues, which sure is no bad thing, and suggest a possible career path as her experience grows.

Mixed in with all of this are some of the most painful, if cleverly conceived puns, on the market - and it's these that will lodge immovably in the brain.
